Many deaths were unavoidable, but the majority, perhaps 70%, should never have happened. Thus, the number who died needlessly has exceeded US combat deaths from WW II. The missteps of Donald Trump magnified this serious contagion.
To control an epidemic, its spread must be limited. The sick must be cared for, and masks, personal protective equipment, limits on movement, and social distancing are of critical importance. These standard epidemiological methods were used by many nations to slow or stop the spread of COVID-19.
While a pandemic must be fought by testing for the virus, contact tracing, and isolation when appropriate, Trump's counterproductive leadership spectacularly failed to provide all of the above.
